2014 Men's
Club Championship
RECAP

The 2014 Men's Club Championship turned out to be a true test of golf.  The Golf Course itself was in incredible condition as weather proceeding the weekend had be beautiful.  The Field was divided into 4 flights with a few players making the leap to the Championship Flight with hopes of lifting the trophy.  36 Holes of Stroke Play competition would be what determined our Club Champions this year.   Medal Play tends to expose weaknesses and lean on strengths as just one hole can cost you the championship as many found out.

In the C Flight, Ed Cornell came out firing with a fantastic round of 90 on Day One giving him a 7 shot lead.  Unfortunately he couldn't quite back it up on Day Two, but did played well enough for a T-2nd finish.  The C Flight Club Championship was won by Tom Mroczkowski who played solid on Day One shooting a 98.  This second round 94 was enough to secure a two stroke victory.

The B Flight was a much closer race.  Leo Bailey raced out of the gates with a fantastic score of 81 in round one good enough for a 3 stroke lead.  It looked as if he would run away with it, but after a stumble on the 16th hole, he finished day two with a score of 87.  His two day total of 168 was good enough for a T-2 Finish along with Abe Newman and Mike Rasor.  However, the weekend belonged to Puneet Singh who fired a solid second round score of 81 which included a back 9 score of 38.  His two day total of 167 was just enough to bring home the championship.

Not to be outdone, the A Flight saw high drama as well with 36 holes proving to be not enough to determine a champion.  Day One leader, Tim Bullock and Greg Helmick tied after regulation with a two day total of 156.  A playoff ensued with Mr. Helmick playing first off of number 1.  He and Mr. Bullock both played fine tee shots which found the fairway.  Mr. Bullock played first and hit an amazing shot into the green which came to rest 7 feet from the hole.  Mr. Helmick hit a fine shot onto the green, but not close enough to get the birdie to drop.  Mr. Helmick rolled in his par putt putting the pressure square on Mr. Bullock.  Mr. Bullock stepped up and knocked in the birdie putt to win the playoff and become the A Flight Club Champion.

The Championship Flight was also a close race as to be expected.  Ric Haury played a smooth first round of golf shooting 9 hole scores of 37 and 36 for an opening round of 73 which gave him a two shot lead over defending champion Mark Guadagni.  Mr. Guadagni had cut the lead to one after 9 holes on day two, but with bogeys on 12 and 13 he gave Mr. Haury a 3 stroke lead with 5 to play.  Meanwhile in the group ahead, Kevin McCreary was making a run turing in 36 and birdieing the 11th hole.  His run ended on the 12th, making a 6.  He would steady the ship finishing with a solid round of 75 and a T-2nd Finish with a tournament total of 152.

Mr. Haury's only bogey on the back 9 came on number 14, but he remained calm and finished with 4 straight pars for a second day score of 74.  His 36 hole total of 147 (+3) was good enough for a 5 shot victory.  This is Mr. Haury's first Club Championship victory which could be the first of many.  Thank you to all of the participants for playing and supporting this important Club Tradition.

Congratulations to our
2014 Men's Club Champion
Ric Haury
