By the time we feel a surge of strong negative emotion (anger, anxiety, nervousness, fear), we’ve already allowed an unwanted thought stream to continue for way too long. We’ve piled up story after unhappy story to a point where our chances of quickly stopping the momentum and power of its strong emotional steam is slim at best (much like trying to stop a train that is racing out of control at 500 miles per hour dead in its tracks).  As obvious as it seems, the best way to control the energy of any negative thought stream is long before the momentum grabs hold and the emotion is felt. Our priority, then, before we hit any shot is to get into a positive state of mind, at which time we give ourselves the best opportunity to sustain the speed of the engine and move it mindfully along the tracks.

Most golfers are looking for different skills to “do” as they improve through practice and play.  We are, after all, taught that effort and action are where the real work takes place.  What we’re saying that is profoundly different is that we create a mind state of “being” first.  It’s not that we don’t take action, but we don’t jump into the action until we are first in a good state of mind. Our “how-we-be” (emotions) become the foundational building block of any action we take, and our doings efficiently and effortlessly orchestrate an inspired level of performance that is beyond compare.

Most of us think the reason we believe that something is true is because we have seen its evidence time and again. In reality, the only reason something appears for our viewing pleasure is because we have convinced ourselves of its validity and truth.  Even the golf shot that shows up “randomly” is not as mysterious as we have made it out to be.  Instead, each shot is a physical expression of what we have been consciously or unconsciously energizing and thinking about. What we see is what we first believe and not the other way around.

2014 Ladies
Club Championship
RECAP

Monday Night, Mother Nature decided to pour over 2 inches of rain on our golf course, just in time for the 2014 Ladies Club Championship. The ladies of Silver Lake tackled the wet golf course with out hesitation attempting to become the 2014 Ladies Champion.

Round 1 was riddled with casual water, washed out bunkers, and some new ponds that mother nature herself had designed over night. We even saw one member take off her socks and shoes and wade in to the pond in #7 fairway to retrieve her ball. After Day 1, Defending Champion, Mary Ann Miano had posted a very well played 80 and had a 3-shot lead over Becka Kasapis.

The course drained well over night and the course was in better shape for round 2. With cool conditions and lingering casual water, the course was going to be a main adversary for all the players. In tough conditions, Becka Kasapis fired a very impressive 77, to bring home the 2014 Ladies Club Championship over Mary Ann Miano who shot 88.

Outside progress in our games is easy to measure once we understand the internal relationship between desire and belief. In other words, there is absolutely nothing that we cannot do, have, or see in our games once we are energetically in harmony with what we want. There are no limitations to performance apart from those that each of us applies with thoughts that contradict desire.  Just as there is no “out there” sabotaging our performance, there is nothing appearing in our games that does not match what is going on “in here” first.

2014 Men's
Club Championship
RECAP

The 2014 Men's Club Championship turned out to be a true test of golf.  The Golf Course itself was in incredible condition as weather proceeding the weekend had be beautiful.  The Field was divided into 4 flights with a few players making the leap to the Championship Flight with hopes of lifting the trophy.  36 Holes of Stroke Play competition would be what determined our Club Champions this year.   Medal Play tends to expose weaknesses and lean on strengths as just one hole can cost you the championship as many found out.

In the C Flight, Ed Cornell came out firing with a fantastic round of 90 on Day One giving him a 7 shot lead.  Unfortunately he couldn't quite back it up on Day Two, but did played well enough for a T-2nd finish.  The C Flight Club Championship was won by Tom Mroczkowski who played solid on Day One shooting a 98.  This second round 94 was enough to secure a two stroke victory.

The B Flight was a much closer race.  Leo Bailey raced out of the gates with a fantastic score of 81 in round one good enough for a 3 stroke lead.  It looked as if he would run away with it, but after a stumble on the 16th hole, he finished day two with a score of 87.  His two day total of 168 was good enough for a T-2 Finish along with Abe Newman and Mike Rasor.  However, the weekend belonged to Puneet Singh who fired a solid second round score of 81 which included a back 9 score of 38.  His two day total of 167 was just enough to bring home the championship.

Not to be outdone, the A Flight saw high drama as well with 36 holes proving to be not enough to determine a champion.  Day One leader, Tim Bullock and Greg Helmick tied after regulation with a two day total of 156.  A playoff ensued with Mr. Helmick playing first off of number 1.  He and Mr. Bullock both played fine tee shots which found the fairway.  Mr. Bullock played first and hit an amazing shot into the green which came to rest 7 feet from the hole.  Mr. Helmick hit a fine shot onto the green, but not close enough to get the birdie to drop.  Mr. Helmick rolled in his par putt putting the pressure square on Mr. Bullock.  Mr. Bullock stepped up and knocked in the birdie putt to win the playoff and become the A Flight Club Champion.

The Championship Flight was also a close race as to be expected.  Ric Haury played a smooth first round of golf shooting 9 hole scores of 37 and 36 for an opening round of 73 which gave him a two shot lead over defending champion Mark Guadagni.  Mr. Guadagni had cut the lead to one after 9 holes on day two, but with bogeys on 12 and 13 he gave Mr. Haury a 3 stroke lead with 5 to play.  Meanwhile in the group ahead, Kevin McCreary was making a run turing in 36 and birdieing the 11th hole.  His run ended on the 12th, making a 6.  He would steady the ship finishing with a solid round of 75 and a T-2nd Finish with a tournament total of 152.

Mr. Haury's only bogey on the back 9 came on number 14, but he remained calm and finished with 4 straight pars for a second day score of 74.  His 36 hole total of 147 (+3) was good enough for a 5 shot victory.  This is Mr. Haury's first Club Championship victory which could be the first of many.  Thank you to all of the participants for playing and supporting this important Club Tradition.

Congratulations to our
2014 Men's Club Champion
Ric Haury

Detachment is not about not caring or resignation or checking out.  In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.  Detachment is an extremely good feeling (high vibrating) emotional state where we are calmly allowing our golf shots to unfold free of judgment, self-criticism, or blame.  By detaching from unwanted emotions, we stop leaking internal energy.  It is then that we have more of the good stuff to tap into; a reservoir of positive flowing energy that we bring to the next shot, and the next, and on and on.

We can find a way to believe.  Or we can find a way not to disbelieve.  Either energy will work quite well.

It’s not just that it’s nice to be in a good mood. It is, but that’s not the point. The point is that the energy underlying the emotions we feel - happy, unhappy, indifferent, joyful, pessimistic, whatever – is eventually going to manifest into the experiences we have been repeatedly thinking about. Like it or not, the phenomenal power of emotion cannot be undone. We can, however, scan our internal radar screens to observe and become more aware of what we are sensing and feeling right now. Through observation and awareness, we begin the all-important shift toward a happier and more satisfying state of mind.  We come to “(k)now” – we know in the here and now – that we are powerful magnets in creating every life experience that is unfolding before our very eyes.
